This combination was one of the many "accidental" artworks
created during ValSFA meetings. Note that it is one of the few mimeographed
covers (not ditto). For the record, drawing directly on a mimeo stencil was a
pain. You used a stylus to scrape away the wax so the ink would pass through
where you scratched. If you made a mistake, it was virtually uncorrectable (you
could try to patch the wax with a sticky correction fluid (called
"corflu"), but it didn't work very well.
Keith was supposed to do the cover. He drew the head and then his hand slipped
as he was drawing the shoulders, so in typical fashion he just tossed it, saying
"this is fucked" and leaving us without a cover. Dwain prevailed on
Hatter to work on it. He added the segmented arm and leg with all the eyeballs
(and saved the piece, in my opinion).
But Dwain felt the image was too vague, and so asked me to flesh it out. I placed the sword in the hand (I did a lot of swords in those days, don't ask me why) and added the back arm and leg and the tunic. I also lightly scraped away wax behind the figure to attempt to add some depth and did the crappy lettering.
