Jim Keith and I were both smitten by the Dunsany bug at an early age. We
discovered a couple of ancient first editions of his short story collections,
published in 1910, moldering in the stacks at the Pomona Public Library in
the mid-60's when we were around 14 years old. These books were lavishly
illustrated in a style most appropriate to Lord D's fanciful prose by the
legendary S.H. Sime.
We kept those books until they were way overdue and then checked them out again
and again. The illustrations were a lasting fascination for both of us, and
definitely influenced my own artistic style in later years (while Keith tended
to be more influenced by Jack Gaughan).
Since these four pages appeared in October of 1966, Keith must have done them when he was about 17, maybe three years after our original discovery of Dunsany's tales. For some reason he was particularly fond of THE HORDE OF THE GIBBELINS, although I never knew exactly why.
